SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – Canadian pianist andrée-Ann Deschênes will return to The Loft in Sault Ste. Marie on Friday, Nov. 14, for a performance showcasing her vibrant interpretations of Brazilian-inspired piano works.
Deschênes, described as bringing “energy, humour and astonishing talent,” pairs classically trained sensibilities with influences from jazz and other art forms. Her commitment to lesser-known composers led to her 2018 album, The Ovalle Project, featuring the works of early 20th-century Brazilian composer Jayme Ovalle.
Her new album, Wanderings, a mosaic of newly commissioned compositions influenced by jazz, Brazilian and classical aesthetics, has garnered critical acclaim, including being selected as Record of the Week on CBC Music’s In Concert in 2024 by host Paolo Pietropaolo.Wanderings has also been featured on CBC Music’s Saturday Night Jazz and classical WSMR’s Modern Notebook, and received rave reviews in The Whole Note and Brazil’s Concerto Magazine.
Deschênes holds an Advanced Diploma in Jazz from Humber College, a master’s degree in Afro-Latin music from California State University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Claremont Graduate University.
