St. Thomas, Virgin Islands – The Oregon State men’s basketball team suffered a 73-65 defeat to UMass Monday afternoon at the Paradise Jam.
Malcolm Christie led the Beavers with 17 points off the bench, shooting 4-for-9 from three-point range and recording three steals. Olavi Suutla contributed 12 points and seven rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench, while Dez White added 12 points on three three-pointers. Josiah Lake II finished with 11 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals, and Noah Amenhauser scored eight points, going 3-for-4 from the floor. Oregon State shot 44.9 percent from the field overall.
UMass opened the game with a 7-0 run. Oregon State responded to take it’s first lead midway through the first half. The Minutemen regained a nine-point advantage with five minutes remaining, but back-to-back three-pointers from White brought the Beavers within two with three minutes left before halftime. UMass led 34-31 at the intermission,with Malcolm Christie pacing Oregon state with nine first-half points.
An 8-0 run early in the second half gave Oregon State a 48-43 lead. UMass answered with nine consecutive points to regain a 54-50 advantage at the under-12 media timeout. The teams traded leads, with the Beavers holding a 62-61 edge with six minutes remaining.
The score was tied at 65 with 2:59 to play, but UMass closed the game on an 8-0 run to secure the victory.
oregon State will return to Gill Coliseum Saturday for a matchup with Cal Baptist.
