BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Ohio State field hockey team saw its Big Ten Tournament run end Friday wiht a 3-1 loss too third-seeded Iowa in the semifinals. the seventh-seeded Buckeyes finished the season with an 8-10 overall record.
The defeat concludes a promising season for Ohio State,which battled through a competitive Big Ten conference. Iowa’s victory advances them to the tournament championship game, while the Buckeyes await potential at-large consideration for the NCAA Tournament.
Makenna Webster put Ohio State on the board first,scoring just 3:32 into the opening quarter. Iowa quickly responded, tying the game at 1-1 with a goal off a penalty corner with 2:31 remaining in the first. The Hawkeyes then took control in the second quarter,scoring twice more on penalty corners to build a 3-1 halftime lead.
Ohio State had a chance to cut into the deficit midway through the third quarter, earning a penalty stroke, but Zella Bailey’s shot was saved by the Iowa goalkeeper. Despite late opportunities, including a penalty corner and a rebound attempt, the Buckeyes were unable to find the back of the net in the fourth quarter.
Webster concluded the season with a career-high 19 goals, along with a team-best seven assists and 45 points. Katie Fichtner, Anne Marie Krebs, and Webster each recorded three shots against Iowa. Goalkeeper maddie Stevens made three saves for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State was outshot 12-8 but earned more penalty corners than Iowa,6-3.
