Ocoee, FL - Health officials are investigating a possible outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease perhaps linked to the Crunch Fitness location on Silver Star Road in Ocoee, according to a law firm representing individuals affected by the illness. At least one member of the Ocoee Crunch Fitness has been hospitalized with a confirmed case of the disease.
Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, often found in water systems. While the source of the current cases remains undetermined, the investigation is focused on the Crunch Fitness facility due to its history; the location previously operated as an LA Fitness and was the site of three Legionnaires’ cases investigated in 2017.
Crunch Fitness has stated it is indeed cooperating with health officials and has proactively closed off portions of the gym to conduct thorough water testing of its pool and spa systems, utilizing certified third-party specialists. The company reports having invested over $5 million in renovations to the facility, including its HVAC and aquatic systems, before opening in 2024.
The Florida Department of Health has declined to comment on the ongoing epidemiology investigation. Despite the testing, the facility remains open to members.
One gym member, identified only as Jones, told News 6 she chose not to work out after speaking with facility staff, stating, ”We need to be safe in that habitat.”
Management at the Crunch Fitness location declined to provide a statement when contacted by News 6, requesting privacy.
