Abuse Study Reveals Nuns as Both Victims and Perpetrators in Religious communities
A newly released study has uncovered a disturbing reality within religious orders: nuns are not only victims of sexual abuse, but also,in some cases, perpetrators. The research details instances of superiors – including Obers and Sisters responsible for novices – abusing thier power for sexual gratification, ranging from considerable sexual abuse to rape.
The findings challenge long-held assumptions about abuse within the Church and highlight a deeply embedded taboo surrounding misconduct between religious members. barbara Haslbeck, a key voice in addressing the issue, emphasizes the critical importance of initiating a thorough examination of these cases, stating, “It’s about considerable sexual abuse to rapes. The abuse of religious on religious is a taboo in the taboo.”
The study carries particular weight for Swiss religious communities, as several orders recently withdrew from financially supporting the abuse research, arguing they were not implicated as perpetrators, only as potential victims. This stance is now being questioned in light of the new evidence.
Haslbeck recommends religious communities implement clear guidelines for mentorship, openly address sexuality within the context of their vows, and restructure hierarchies to reduce opportunities for abuse. These preventative measures should extend to all communities, even those no longer accepting new members. The study’s release marks a pivotal moment, demanding accountability and systemic change within religious institutions.
