Radio Shake-Up: Stars Eye Commercial Stations, Veronica Faces Challenges – Patrick Kicken Reports
Amsterdam, Netherlands – A potential exodus of talent from NPO radio stations is brewing, with several prominent personalities reportedly considering moves to commercial competitors, according to radio journalist Patrick Kicken. The shifts come amidst competitive pressures, particularly surrounding long-form music programming like Radio Veronica’s recent Top 3000.
Marcel de vries, currently hosting the morning show on Sterren NL (part of AVROTROS, heard via DAB+), is rumored to be leaving for a commercial station. Kicken identifies Radio Noordzee, owned by john de Mol, as the likely destination. This move would bolster Radio Noordzee’s Dutch-language music offerings, potentially aiming to draw listeners away from Sterren NL and Radionl. While attempts to secure Jan Paparazzi and Corné Klijn from Sterren NL haven’t yet succeeded, landing de Vries would be a significant win for de Mol. A move to 100%NL is considered less likely unless Rob van Someren and his team transition to Radio Veronica, potentially opening an afternoon slot for de Vries.
The report also focuses on developments at Radio Veronica. Thomas Hekker is slated to appear on the station this weekend, resulting in the release of 04-06h daily on NPO Radio 2, now filled by Anneli Verhees. Kicken notes this move appears partially motivated by fulfilling inclusivity quotas at the NPO.
Furthermore, Sterren NL’s wouter van der Goes is reportedly lobbying for a return to the NPO. His current afternoon show with Frank van ‘t Hof on Veronica is struggling to gain traction, even during the highly triumphant Top 3000 event, where the duo reportedly appeared disengaged while promoting the list.Should Rob van Someren return to Veronica from 100%NL, Kicken suggests this could explain van der Goes’ desire to rejoin NPO Radio 2.
Radio 10’s recent ratings dip is attributed to the competition from Radio Veronica’s Top 3000,despite claims from some that Gordon’s new morning show is to blame. Kicken argues the overall performance of Radio 10 has suffered throughout the day due to the prolonged hit list. He anticipates a clearer picture of the impact on October 1st, one month after Gordon began co-hosting with Froukje.
Kicken also questions Veronica’s strategy of adding more djs to address the issue, suggesting the team is already too large. He believes the Top 3000’s success highlights a failure to maximize the potential of Veronica’s regular programming. He further notes that program leader Robbert-Jan van de Velde appears to be struggling in his position.
