RENO, Nev. - The New Mexico Lobos womenS soccer team defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack 3-1 on Sunday, fueled by a brace from Allie Anderson and a first collegiate goal from Claire Roybal. The victory improves the Lobos’ record to 7-2-4 overall and 3-0-2 in Mountain West Conference play.
The Wolf Pack struck first with a penalty kick in the 21st minute, awarded after a handball. Though, Anderson quickly answered, converting a penalty kick of her own – her sixth goal of the season – to tie the match.
The Lobos took the lead shortly after, capitalizing on a speedy restart. Anderson initiated the play with a throw-in, leading to a pass from N. Anderson to mercedes Morris, who crossed the ball into the box for an unmarked N.Anderson to score her seventh goal of the season, tying Alejandra Puerto for the team lead. A goal by Puerto in the 29th minute was later waived off due to an offside call.
Nevada outshot UNM 8-7 in the first half, with Lobos goalkeeper Alyson Campbell recording six saves to maintain the 2-1 scoreline at halftime. Campbell continued her strong performance in the second half, adding two more saves for a season-high total of eight.
Roybal sealed the victory in the 72nd minute, scoring her first collegiate goal with a shot that deflected off a Nevada defender. Celina Frenz delivered the initial ball into the box.
UNM finished with a 12-11 shot advantage and a 5-3 edge in second-half shots, while Nevada held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
The Lobos’ undefeated start to Mountain West play - 3-0-2 – mirrors their performance in 2021 (4-0-1) and spring 2021 (5-0-0).
New Mexico returns home to host Utah State on thursday, Boise State on Sunday, and Wyoming on Oct. 23.
