New Flu Variant Sparks Concern as Vaccination Rates Rise
PARIS – A newly circulating flu variant, identified as a sub-clade of H3N2 (K), is raising concerns among health experts who predict a perhaps intense flu season this winter. Despite the virus’s genetic drift, officials are urging increased vaccination, citing its continued effectiveness in preventing severe illness and reducing hospital strain.
The emergence of this more contagious strain comes as France has already administered over 8 million flu vaccine doses since October 14th, marking a 22% increase in uptake compared to the same period last year, according to the General Directorate of Health. while flu activity remains generally low across France, with most regions at a “basic level,” Mayotte is currently in a pre-epidemic phase since week 44,according to Public Health France.
Experts emphasize that vaccination remains the primary defense against serious complications. “Despite this drift, vaccination remains our most effective measure to prevent serious forms and reduce pressure on hospitals,” stated American virologist Peter Palese in a recent TF1 Info report. Edoardo Colzani, an expert at the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), echoed this sentiment, urging eligible individuals to get vaccinated promptly: “If you are eligible for vaccination, don’t wait. Getting vaccinated now is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and those around you from severe forms of the disease this winter.”
