Former NBA Sixth Man of the Year Rodney Rogers Dies at 54
Rodney Rogers, a former NBA player best known for his time with the Phoenix Suns and winning the 1992 Sixth Man of the Year award, has died at the age of 54.Rogers passed away peacefully surrounded by family after battling a long illness,according to reports. His death marks a loss for the basketball community and those inspired by his resilience following a life-altering accident years after his playing career.
Rogers enjoyed a nine-year NBA career, primarily as a valuable role player known for his shooting and versatility. While his on-court achievements are significant, he became an enduring symbol of strength and determination after being paralyzed in a 2009 vehicle accident. He continued to inspire through his advocacy and positive outlook, receiving wake Forest University’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2022.
Drafted 29th overall in 1989 by the Detroit Pistons, Rogers quickly found a home in Phoenix, where he spent the majority of his career. He blossomed into a key contributor off the bench for the Suns, culminating in his 1992 Sixth Man of the Year honor, averaging 16.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. he also played for the Los Angeles Clippers and New Jersey Nets before retiring in 1998.
Following his NBA career, Rogers remained connected to the game and his alma mater, Wake Forest University, where he was a standout player. He was a beloved figure in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and actively involved in community events.
In 2009, Rogers’ life took a tragic turn when he was paralyzed from the waist down after a car accident. Despite the immense challenges, he faced his new reality with unwavering courage and became an advocate for those living with disabilities.

Rogers is survived by his wife, Faye, and three children: daughters Roddreka and Rydeiah, and son Rodney Rogers II.
