thunder’s Mitchell a Sixth Man of the Year Contender,But Competition Looms
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Thunder guard Ajay Mitchell has emerged as a surprising contender for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award, but his path to the honor is clouded by the impending return of injured teammates and a strong field of competitors.
Mitchell’s increased role this season is largely due to injuries impacting the Thunder’s perimeter players. All-Star Josh Giddey, in particular, is expected to return sometime this month, possibly reducing Mitchell’s playing time. Lu Dort, along with bench contributors Kenrich Williams and Davis Bertans, also factor into the team’s perimeter rotation.
When fully healthy, the Thunder boast a deep perimeter corps including MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, NBA steals leader Cason Wallace, two-time All-Defensive Team selection Alex Caruso, and three-point specialist Isaiah Joe. This depth creates a significant challenge for Mitchell to maintain his current level of minutes and production.
The primary question surrounding Mitchell’s candidacy is weather he can sustain his current pace. This is further complicated by the emergence of other strong Sixth Man candidates, notably Miami Heat forward Jaime Jaquez Jr., currently the frontrunner according to ESPN BET. Jaquez is averaging 17.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game, contributing to 38.0 fantasy points per game.
While Jaquez also plays within a deep rotation, the Heat’s injury situation is less immediately impactful. Only Tyler Herro is expected to return to the rotation, and his return is not anticipated until late 2025. Jaquez’s versatility, with the ability to play multiple positions including shooting guard, small forward, and power forward, further solidifies his role.
Currently, Mitchell’s odds are +750. While his current performance warrants consideration, the uncertainty surrounding his future role makes him a riskier bet then Jaquez. The long NBA season and the inevitability of further injuries mean the landscape coudl shift, but at present, Jaquez represents a more secure investment.
