Title: Mount Athos Earthquake: 4.8 Magnitude, No Injuries Reported

by David Harrison – Chief Editor

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Mount Athos, Greece, at 4:20 a.m. local time on September 22, 2025. Initial reports indicate no damage or injuries.

the quake’s epicenter was located 11 kilometers (7 miles) west-northwest of Karyes, the administrative center of the monastic republic, at a depth of 12 kilometers, according to the Athens Institute of Geodynamics. Mount Athos, a peninsula in northern greece, is renowned for its historically significant, exclusively male Eastern Orthodox monasteries. Greece experiences frequent seismic activity due to its location on the boundary where the African and Eurasian tectonic plates converge, resulting in ongoing geological interaction. While this earthquake was felt across the region, the depth and magnitude suggest a limited impact on the vulnerable, centuries-old monastic structures. Authorities are currently assessing the area for any unforeseen consequences.
