Minutewomen secure Eighth Shutout with Dominant 5-0 Victory Over Bellarmine
Amherst, MA – The University of Massachusetts field hockey team continued its impressive form, defeating Bellarmine 5-0 on Friday afternoon and earning their eighth shutout of the season. Five different Minutewomen found the back of the net in a commanding performance that showcased their offensive firepower and defensive solidity.
This victory moves massachusetts one conference win away from clinching at least a share of its first MAC Regular Season Championship. The Minutewomen’s dominant performance against Bellarmine - holding them to just two shots throughout the entire contest – underscores their position as a force in the conference. The win also establishes a 1-0-0 all-time record against the Knights in their first-ever matchup.
The scoring began in the first quarter with Marlena McCarthy finding the net at the 7:18 mark. Cara Falconer extended the lead just 1:25 later, deflecting a pass from Fiene Jenneskens to make it 3-0. Jenneskens recorded her second consecutive game with two assists.
Kristy Leonard added a fourth goal early in the second half, while Sophie Kent tallied Massachusetts’ second goal of the third quarter, pushing the score to 5-0 with 4:51 remaining.
Massachusetts dominated the game statistically, finishing with a 21-0 advantage in total shots and earning 8 penalty corners. The Minutewomen had 14 shots on goal.
The Minutewomen will return to action on Sunday, October 26, hosting regional foe Harvard at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and can be followed live on umassathletics.com or UMassFH on Twitter.
