Miami Beach has greenlit plans for a new museum to occupy the space currently held by the Regal Cinema on Lincoln Road. The decision, approved recently by city officials, comes despite significant public outcry to save the movie theater.
The closure of the Regal marks another shift in Lincoln Road’s commercial landscape, impacting entertainment options for residents and visitors. While thousands of letters were submitted urging the city to intervene, planning board members confirmed Regal is operating on a month-to-month lease and intends to leave irrespective. The incoming museum, spearheaded by entrepreneur and former mayoral candidate Steve Burke, is called the Superhuman Museum.
During a September 9th planning board meeting, members acknowledged the community’s desire to preserve the cinema but emphasized the city’s limited influence over regal’s business decisions. “the letters from the residents would suggest that we have the power to keep the movie theater there, and we don’t,” stated board member Brian Elias. “Because I hate to make the public think we’re disregarding their concerns and emails.”
The approval paves the way for the transformation of the Lincoln Road location, signaling a move towards diversifying the area’s attractions.
