Massachusetts Mayoral Races See Shifts in Power, Historic Firsts

BOSTON – Several Massachusetts cities elected new mayors Tuesday, while incumbents held onto their positions in⁣ others, marking a period of change and continued leadership across the state. The results signal shifts in local governance and include a historic first for the city of Brockton.

These mayoral elections are crucial for shaping the future of​ these communities, impacting everything from local budgets and growth projects to public safety⁢ and education initiatives.The‍ outcomes reflect the priorities of residents ‌and set the stage for the next four years of city leadership.

Boston

Mayor Michelle Wu secured a​ second term, running unopposed after preliminary election challenger Josh Kraft withdrew from the race in September.

Brockton

Brockton will have its first mayor of color⁢ as City ‍Councilor Moises Rodrigues defeated City Councilor Jean Bradley Derenoncourt. Unofficial results show Rodrigues receiving 6,680​ votes (50.54%) to Derenoncourt’s 6,420 votes (48.57%).

Everett

A change in leadership is coming to Everett, where City Councilor Robert Van ‍Campen unseated long-time Mayor Carlo DeMaria, who has held the position⁤ since⁣ 2008. Van Campen received 4,118 votes to DeMaria’s 3,440, according to unofficial results.

Fall River

Incumbent Mayor Paul Coogan⁤ narrowly won re-election, defeating Gabriel Boomer Amaral by a margin of 5,841 votes (50.68%) to 5,616 votes (48.73%).

Lawrence

Lawrence residents re-elected Brian De Pena as mayor,who defeated Juan ‌”Manny” Gonzalez with ​5,982 votes to 5,110. The Secretary of the Commonwealth Bill Galvin’s office will monitor the‍ election following “numerous complaints” regarding absentee ballot applications.

Methuen

Incumbent ⁤Mayor DJ Beauregard secured another term, defeating Barbara⁤ R. Stoebel with 4,459 votes to​ 1,064.

Somerville

Somerville ⁤elected ⁤City Councilor Jake Wilson as its new mayor, defeating City⁢ Councilor Willie Burnley Jr. Wilson received 11,185 votes (54.26%) to Burnley’s 9,054 votes (43.93%). Incumbent Katjana Ballantyne did not advance past the preliminary election.
