Dense Fog Causes Hazardous Driving Conditions Across Southern New England
A special weather statement remains in effect until 9 a.m. Monday for twelve Massachusetts counties – Northern and Southern Worcester, Franklin, Middlesex, Essex, Hampshire, Hampden, Norfolk, suffolk, Bristol, Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes and nantucket – due to widespread, dense fog. The National Weather Service issued the alert at 5:07 a.m. Monday, warning of significantly reduced visibility.
The fog is impacting the Monday morning commute, with visibility dropping to as low as a quarter-mile in some areas, and more commonly ranging from one-half to three miles. “Motorists should expect reduced visibility in many areas during the morning commuting period,” the weather service stated. Drivers are advised to use low-beam headlights and increase following distance to ensure safety.
Visibility is expected to gradually improve as the morning progresses into the mid-morning hours.
