Coastal Festival in Maré Begins with Resilience Amid Travel Disruptions
Maré, New Caledonia - A vibrant coastal festival commenced in Maré today, showcasing the island’s fresh produce and hospitality, despite important travel delays impacting visitor numbers. Local vendors displayed an array of goods, including organic pineapples, fresh fish, and locally caught langoustes and parrotfish, setting a cheerful scene along the shoreline.
The festival’s launch was tempered by the late arrival of an Air Calédonie flight initially scheduled for this morning, ultimately landing later in the day.The delayed aircraft carried approximately 70 passengers-potential tourists and buyers crucial to the local economy-leaving some vendors frustrated. “It’s repetitive, every time, it’s a problem with the plane,” one exhibitor expressed.Fortunately, a portion of expected visitors arrived via the Betico ferry.
Despite the setback, organizers remain optimistic, anticipating over 100 trail runners to participate in a major sporting event scheduled for Saturday.Residents have prepared a warm welcome for the athletes and all visitors, demonstrating the community’s enduring spirit and commitment to showcasing Maré’s unique offerings. The festival provides a vital economic boost for the island, highlighting its agricultural abundance and attracting external investment.
