Title: Manchester Airport Link Road Closed After Serious Incident – Live Updates

April 26, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A section of the A57 Manchester Airport link road has been closed following a serious incident reported by Greater Manchester Police on Tuesday morning.

The closure affects the eastbound carriageway between Junction 1 of the M56 and the airport terminals, disrupting access to one of the UK’s busiest airports during peak travel hours.

Police confirmed the incident was reported at approximately 7:15 a.m. Local time, prompting an immediate response from multiple units including traffic officers, forensic teams, and specialist support.

Greater Manchester Police stated in an official update that the road remains closed “while officers investigate the circumstances” and urged drivers to avoid the area and follow diversion routes.

National Highways confirmed via its traffic monitoring service that the closure is causing significant delays on surrounding routes, including the M56 and A5103, with queues extending several miles during the morning rush.

Manchester Airport issued a statement advising passengers to allow extra time for journeys to the airport and to consider public transport options where available, noting that train and Metrolink services to the airport stations remain operational.

The airport’s own traffic management team is coordinating with local authorities to monitor the situation and provide real-time updates to passengers via its website and mobile app.

As of 10:30 a.m., no further details about the nature of the incident have been released by police, who said they would provide an update “as soon as it is appropriate to do so.”

No arrests have been made public, and authorities have not confirmed whether the incident involves a collision, suspicious activity, or another category of event.

The closure remains in effect, with diversion signs directing traffic via the M56 Junction 3 and the A538 through Hale and Altrincham.

Local residents have reported increased congestion on residential routes as drivers seek alternative paths, prompting concerns from community groups about secondary impacts on neighbourhood streets.

Greater Manchester Police have not released any estimated time for reopening, stating only that the investigation is ongoing and the scene remains preserved for forensic examination.

Manchester Airport continues to operate all flights as scheduled, with ground staff managing increased demand for curbside drop-off and pickup zones amid the road disruption.
