Malta High School’s football team continued its winning ways Friday,securing a 9-8 victory over Huntley Project in a defensive battle that marked the start of the Class B football season. The win extends the defending champions’ program streak to 13 consecutive games.The tightly contested opening weekend across Class B football signals a perhaps competitive season, with several games decided by narrow margins. For Malta,the victory hinged on a pivotal defensive play,showcasing their strength as they aim for back-to-back championships. The mustangs will face Shepherd next Friday,seeking to maintain their momentum.
the decisive moment came on the final play of the first half when Dawson Hammond intercepted a pass and returned it approximately 75 yards for a touchdown.Hammond secured the interception at his own 45-yard line,leaping in front of a Huntley Project receiver,and navigated to the end zone with the help of blockers.
Prior to Hammond’s interception, both teams’ defenses dominated, keeping the score locked at 0-0.
