Macron Warns ⁤Zelenskyy US Support for Ukraine Could Waver, German Officials Urge European Independence

Kyiv, Ukraine ⁤- French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly cautioned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ‌that⁤ US support for Ukraine may⁣ falter should Donald⁤ Trump win the upcoming US presidential election, ‌potentially leading to ⁢a territorial‍ concession to Russia.‍ the warning, ⁣disclosed by sources familiar with the⁤ discussions, underscores growing European anxieties‌ about the reliability of American aid as ‌Ukraine continues to fight against russian aggression.

the concerns come as leading German political figures are‌ increasingly‌ vocal about the need for Europe ⁣to take⁢ greater responsibility for⁣ its own security and‍ defense. ‌German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius warned that a ⁤militarily defeated⁢ or destabilized Ukraine would⁣ pose a significant risk to ‍European security, stating, “A dictated peace would be disastrous for⁤ Europe … as⁤ a Ukraine which is‍ militarily beaten or potentially even ⁤defeated at the negotiating⁣ table (or) destabilised domestically through Russian influence, would put Europe’s ⁢security at risk.”

Friedrich‌ Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU),further emphasized the urgency of ‍European independence in a ‍guest‍ column‍ for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Merz advocated‍ for utilizing ⁢frozen Russian state assets to support Ukraine and argued that⁣ Europe must act decisively to protect its interests, stating, “The question of European independence is being decided today, when our security interests are under⁣ threat. ⁢and it will be ⁤decided‍ by whether⁤ we rise to this challenge.”

Merz stressed the importance of European agency⁣ in the conflict, adding, “We are sending a ⁣signal of European independence, a signal that we Europeans decide and shape what⁣ happens on our continent.” He also argued against relying on non-European countries to determine the fate of frozen Russian assets, asserting, “what we⁤ decide now will determine⁤ the future of Europe.”
