Thunder from Gerena! Is Levski Getting Welton Back?
Sofia, Bulgaria - Levski supporters are buzzing with speculation as the club explores the possibility of re-signing Brazilian winger Welton from Japan’s Gamba Osaka. The move comes after Welton reportedly contacted Levski management directly, expressing his desire to return to the “blues.”
Welton’s potential return represents a significant opportunity for Levski to bolster their attacking options, but financial hurdles and the player’s existing contract present challenges. The winger was previously a key player for Levski before being sold to Gamba Osaka in early 2024 for a transfer fee exceeding €2 million. Now, a confluence of factors – Welton’s struggles in Japan and Levski’s ambition – could bring him back to the Georgi Asparuhov Stadium.
The Brazilian’s time in Japan has been hampered by injury and a lack of consistent playing time. A serious injury sidelined him for the frist half of the current year, and despite returning to action in late May, he has primarily featured as a substitute. In 14 J League appearances, Welton has yet to complete a full 90 minutes. A new injury sustained in early October has again ruled him out of contention.
Securing Welton’s services will require Levski to either negotiate a transfer fee with Gamba Osaka or facilitate a contract cancellation for the player. Welton’s current deal with the Japanese club runs until January 2027, and an extension appears unlikely given his recent difficulties. The club is currently evaluating all possible avenues to bring the talented winger back to Gerena.
