New VA Hospital Officially Opens in Tulsa, Promising Expanded Care for Veterans
TULSA, OK – November 12, 2024 – Oklahoma veterans will soon have access to expanded healthcare services with the official transfer of a new Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Tulsa. Celebrated by state and federal leaders today, the facility marks a significant step forward in providing accessible, coordinated medical care for those who served.
The new VA hospital, located across the street from the Oklahoma State University (OSU) Medical Center, is poised to reduce wait times, broaden access to specialized care, and foster stronger collaboration between VA and OSU medical staff. Beyond immediate improvements to veteran healthcare, the hospital is a cornerstone of the burgeoning OSU Academic Medical District, a $515 million project projected to generate 5,000 construction jobs and 2,000 permanent positions.
“This facility will mean shorter wait times, expanding access to specialists, better coordination with OSU medical staff and the students who are going to take care of veterans later in their careers,” stated Under Secretary for Health Shereef Elnahal. “This is about accessibility, connection, and dignity for veterans and their families.”
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt highlighted the broader impact of the hospital alongside the forthcoming Oklahoma Psychiatric Care Center, slated to open in 2026. “what’s happening here is bigger than just a hospital,” Stitt said.”We’re standing in the heart of a new academic medical district that’s really transforming our great city of Tulsa.” He further emphasized the economic benefits, calling it “a moment of gratitude and momentum” for Tulsa and Oklahoma’s future in healthcare innovation and economic development.
The opening of the VA hospital fulfills a vision championed by former Senator Jim Inhofe, whose legacy of service to the state was acknowledged during the ceremony. The facility’s proximity to the OSU Center for Health Sciences teaching hospital will also provide valuable clinical training opportunities for future healthcare professionals specializing in veterans’ care.
