Cardinals Climb in Polls Following Last-Second Victory
BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University football reached new heights in both major NCAA Football championship Subdivision (FCS) polls Monday, ascending to No.17 in teh STATS Perform Top 25 and No. 18 in the AFCA Coaches Poll, program bests in each ranking.The jump comes on the heels of a thrilling,last-second victory at Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday.
The Cardinals’ rise reflects their strong start to the season, currently 5-1 overall and 2-0 in Southland Conference play. this marks the seventh time this season a Lamar player has been recognized with a Southland Conference weekly award, most recently Ronnie Hamrick, who earned SLC defensive Player of the Week honors. The Cardinals’ success positions them as a frontrunner in the SLC, with a crucial Homecoming matchup against UT Rio Grande Valley looming this Saturday.
Saturday’s win in commerce was a dramatic affair,with Lamar leading for just three seconds – the final three.After a penalty against Texas A&M-commerce with 12 seconds remaining on a potential game-tying field goal attempt, the Cardinals opted to decline the penalty and attempt a game-winning touchdown.
Sophomore quarterback Aiden McCown connected with senior receiver Kyndon Fuselier on a crucial pass cutting across the middle for the game-winning score.
Lamar’s next challenge comes against UT Rio Grande Valley (5-1, 1-1 SLC) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Provost Umphrey Stadium. The Vaqueros are one game behind Lamar in the conference standings.
