Kingman too Add Convenience Fees to Credit and Debit Card Payments
KINGMAN, AZ – September 23, 2024 – The City of Kingman will begin implementing convenience fees for customers choosing to pay for city services with credit or debit cards, officials announced today. The change, projected to save the city over $500,000 annually, shifts card processing costs from the city to the customer.
Currently, the City of Kingman absorbs approximately $503,200 each year in fees associated with card payments. These fees represent roughly 50% of all utility billing payments and 30-64% of payments in other departments. By transitioning to a convenience fee model, the city aims to alleviate this financial burden and redirect savings, notably to the Water Operating Fund, perhaps influencing future water rate adjustments.
The new fees will range from 2.95% to 3.5% of the total transaction amount, and may include a transaction minimum depending on the department. These fees will only apply to card payments; customers can continue to pay via bank draft or bill pay through their financial institution without incurring additional charges.
“Card payments have become one of the moast popular and convenient ways to pay for City services,” said Tina Moline, the City’s Finance Director. “This change allows us to continue offering this convenience while being good stewards of taxpayer dollars.”
