Young Playmaker Kees Smit Reveals Why Ajax Trial Didn’t Click, Credits AZ for Development
ALKMAAR, Netherlands – Rising Dutch talent Kees Smit has revealed he briefly trialed with Ajax but ultimately found a better fit at AZ Alkmaar, where he is now flourishing. The young playmaker, recently a European champion with the dutch U19 team, detailed his experience in an interview with Heroes, explaining the stylistic and cultural differences that led him to choose AZ.
Smit participated in four training sessions with Ajax but quickly realized it wasn’t the right habitat. “I didn’t like it anymore,” Smit said. “The boys who played there were very manly, more brutal than me, I wasn’t used to that. AZ suited me better.” He has as become a key player for AZ, earning recognition that has even prompted former national coach Guus Hiddink to suggest a potential call-up to the Dutch national team.
The 19-year-old acknowledges the competition for a national team spot is fierce, particularly with established stars like Frenkie de Jong. Smit identifies Tijjani Reijnders as a player he shares similarities with, noting his preference for playing as an attacking midfielder or a connecting player in the number eight role. Currently focused on continued development at AZ, Smit remains open to the possibility of representing the Netherlands in the future. “I am well on my way, but I also think that – at least this season – I should show more at AZ,” he stated.
