Independence Dentist Ordered to Pay Former Patients $9.5 Million
INDEPENDENCE, MO – A Jackson County judge last month ruled in favor of patients formerly treated by Independence dentist Dr.michael Jenkins, awarding a collective $9.5 million in judgments against him. The rulings stem from lawsuits filed after Jenkins’ practice closed, alleging substandard care that left patients facing extensive and costly corrective procedures.
The cases involve approximately 20 individuals who entrusted Jenkins with their dental health, only to experience complications requiring important intervention. One former patient, identified as Cunningham, described a situation necessitating the complete removal of dental implants, followed by reconstructive surgery including bone grafting - a fix estimated to cost $30,000. The judgments represent a measure of accountability for patients left grappling with both physical and financial burdens.
“People that trusted a professional who was licensed to provide dental services really fell short of his duty to each and every one of them,” stated personal injury lawyer Paemon Aramjoo, who represented many of the plaintiffs. Aramjoo expressed pride in securing the judgments but acknowledged the ongoing challenge of collecting the awarded funds.
The legal actions followed the closure of Jenkins’ practice and highlight growing concerns regarding patient safety within the dental field.
