Offside Trap Costs roma in InterS Top-of-the-Table Victory
ROME – Inter Milan defeated AS Roma 1-0 Saturday at the Stadio Olimpico, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to claim the top spot in Serie A, at least temporarily. The match, a clash between two of the league’s early frontrunners, was decided by a goal from Inter striker Bonny, who exploited a failed offside trap in the first half.
The result sees Inter move ahead of Napoli, who suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to Torino earlier Saturday, while Roma face their second defeat of the season. Despite a more aggressive second-half performance, Roma were unable to break down a resolute Inter defence, adn the loss underscores ongoing challenges in converting momentum into goals. Prior to the match, Roma players had even donned “a helmet” as requested by club legend Francesco Totti, but it proved insufficient for success.
Bonny’s goal stemmed from an overly ambitious and risky offside trap. Celik moved out too late, allowing Bonny to break free and score from close range against AS Roma goalkeeper Svilar in the opening minutes.
Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini’s decision to start the fit-again Dybala as a false nine proved ineffective, with Pellegrini and Cristante failing to create significant chances against Inter’s defense. Inter, managed by Cristian Chivu, also struggled offensively despite their recent 4-1 victory over Cremonese.
The second half saw Roma push for an equalizer, with Dybala testing Inter goalkeeper Sommer with dangerous attempts in the 52nd and 55th minutes. Celik hit the side netting (58th), while substitutes Dovbyk (59th, 88th) and Mkhitaryan (84th) were also denied by Sommer and the post, respectively. Svilar also made a key save against Dumfries (50th).
Inter’s win lifts them to first place in Serie A,while Roma remain in contention for a Champions League spot despite the setback. Napoli’s loss to torino further tightens the race at the top of the table.
