Champaign,IL – Several cities across central Illinois shattered daily snowfall records this weekend, and residents are being warned to prepare for additional snow Monday evening. The National weather Service (NWS) reports a potent winter storm brought historic snowfall totals, followed by a forecast calling for continued cold and further accumulation.

The record-breaking snowfall impacted travel and daily life across the region. Peoria received 5.2 inches on Saturday, eclipsing the previous record of 0.8 inches set in 1937. Lincoln saw 7.8 inches, surpassing its 1942 record of 6.0 inches, and Springfield recorded 8.9 inches, well above the 2.9 inches from 1964. The storm also extended its reach beyond Illinois, dumping more than 8 inches of snow on northern Iowa by Saturday morning, with similar amounts anticipated in Chicago and across parts of Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan, according to the Associated Press.

Meteorologists at the NWS in Lincoln predict another period of snow will develop Monday evening, potentially adding a few more inches to existing totals. Temperatures will remain frigid through Friday, with highs in the 20s to lower 30s and lows dipping into the teens monday through Wednesday night. Areas north of I-72 could experience single-digit lows on Wednesday night.

The heavy snowfall even impacted SaturdayS Fighting Illini football game, the program’s first November night game in the 101-year history of Gies Memorial Stadium. The field was covered in snow during the first half, and strong winds forced fans to only occupy the west side of the stadium.
