ICE Enforcement Operation Underway in Minneapolis, Sparking Local Outcry
Minneapolis, MN – An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation is currently underway in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, prompting swift condemnation from local leaders and raising concerns within the Somali community. The operation, focused on enforcing immigration laws, comes after remarks made by former President Donald Trump criticizing Somali immigrants and following a statement of support from Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer.
The ICE actions are occurring amid heightened political tensions surrounding immigration policy and follow trumps recent comments where he stated, “Somalians, ripped off that state … They contribute nothing. I don’t want them in our country… Their country stinks and we don’t want them in our country.” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter have publicly voiced their support for the Somali community, with Frey stating, “For decades, the Somali community has added greatly to our city. The economic fabric, their hard work, their leadership – it has made Minneapolis a better place.” Carter called for compassion and engagement, criticizing what he described as a strategy of “intentional chaos.”
The operation’s implementation was signaled by White House press Secretary Karoline leavitt, who shared a Fox News article detailing plans for Border Czar Tom Homan to enforce immigration laws in the cities “without apology.” Rep. Emmer responded to Leavitt’s post with a simple “Good.”
Local officials are actively disseminating details regarding rights when interacting with law enforcement. The situation is developing, and further details are expected to emerge as the ICE operation continues.
