Hungary Adjusts Price Controls, Removing Semi-Hard Cheeses from List

Budapest – The Hungarian government has revised its list of products subject to margin ⁣caps, removing semi-hard cheeses effective December 1, according to a decree published in the Hungarian Gazette and reported by Hvg.hu on Friday ⁣night. The move alters the scope of price controls implemented to curb inflation.

The amended regulation maintains margin caps of 10 percent on cheese creams and spreadable cheeses, but removes popular varieties like cheddar, gouda, emmental, edam, and maasdamer. Trappist ⁤cheese remains on the list. This adjustment follows an‌ initial expansion of margin-stopping products ⁢intended ⁣to control food prices.

Alongside the cheese changes, the⁣ government will now ⁢require importers to notify authorities before bringing in gouda, edam, milk, non-condensed cream, and butter. Previously, notification requirements primarily⁣ covered meat, flour, sugar, potatoes, and eggs,as well as UHT and ESL⁣ milk with 1.5 and 2.8 percent fat content-a restriction now extended to all milk types.
