University of Iowa Prepares for Hot Hawkeye Game Day, Prioritizes Fan Safety

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – With temperatures forecast to exceed ​90 degrees, the University of Iowa is taking comprehensive steps ⁣to ensure fan safety at⁣ Saturday’s sold-out football game⁢ between the Iowa ⁣Hawkeyes⁢ and the ⁤UMass Minutemen, kicking off at 6:30 p.m. at Kinnick Stadium.

UI Healthcare is ​bolstering medical ⁢presence with doctors, ⁣nurses,‍ and Carver⁢ College of Medicine students on site.Johnson County Ambulance Service will ​deploy UTVs ⁢throughout parking lots ‌for rapid emergency ⁢response. ⁤Cooling stations are also being established,including an air-conditioned ⁤tent in ‍Krause Family Plaza and an expanded rest area with shelter,cool ​air,and hydration located outside ​the First Aid Station ⁣in the ​stadium’s ‌southeast corner.

Fans are permitted to⁢ bring‍ one sealed water bottle of any size into Kinnick Stadium, or one empty, refillable water bottle.

Beyond these on-site⁢ resources, ‍the University‍ is urging⁣ fans to proactively protect themselves⁢ from the heat. Key recommendations include:

* ​ hydration: Increase fluid intake in the​ days ​leading⁤ up to the game,prioritizing‌ water and avoiding alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.Responsible alcohol ⁢consumption is encouraged.
* Clothing: Wear lightweight, ​loose-fitting clothing and apply sunscreen.
* Sun Protection: Utilize⁤ hats, such as sun hats or visors, to shield the face from the sun.
* ⁢ Seeking Relief: Spend as much time as possible in shaded⁢ or air-conditioned environments.
* Recognizing Symptoms: Immediately seek cool air and fluids if experiencing‌ dizziness, nausea, ⁤or weakness.
* Buddy System: Monitor​ fellow fans⁤ for signs of heat-related illness, as individuals may not always recognize their own symptoms.
* Seeking Help: ‍ If experiencing symptoms ⁣of heat-related illness, fans ​are advised to go home if able or seek medical attention.

The University of Iowa and Johnson County homeland Security & Emergency Management Agency are working together to provide a safe and enjoyable experience ⁤for ‌all attendees.
