WASHINGTON – A newly released internal examination report has found that former US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth recklessly endangered national security by sharing classified military information via teh signal messaging app, CNN reported Tuesday. the report details how Hegseth disseminated real-time updates on planned military strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen, including to his wife and a journalist with The Atlantic, possibly compromising American troops and mission objectives.
The investigation, conducted by an inspector general, centers on incidents from April when Hegseth shared sensitive details about upcoming operations. While Hegseth maintains he made an operational decision to share the information with other Trump administration officials and close associates – a claim unsupported by documentation – the report concludes his actions created unacceptable risk. One message reportedly stated, “Then the first bombs will fall.”
Despite the severity of the breach, Hegseth remained in office following the initial outcry, but faced an internal review. The findings, based on messages from Hegseth’s Signal account, reveal the specificity of the shared intelligence. A redacted version of the report is scheduled for public release Thursday.
