Grammy Awards too Celebrate Latin Music in Prime-Time CBS Special
LOS ANGELES – The Recording Academy will honor the breadth and impact of Latin music with “A Grammy Party of Latin Music,” a primetime special airing on CBS. The program, modeled after previous “salute” broadcasts recognizing artists like The Beatles and Whitney Houston, will feature performances by a diverse lineup including Ángela Aguilar, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, Gloria Estefan, Luis Fonsi, Maren Morris, Laura Pausini, Prince Royce, Carín León, the Warning, Robin Thicke, and Billy Idol. roselyn Sánchez will co-host the event.
The special arrives as latin artists gain increasing prominence within the Grammy Awards. This year’s 68th Annual Grammy Awards, taking place February 1 at Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles, sees Bad Bunny making history as the first Spanish-language artist nominated for record, album, and song of the year for his album “Debí Tirar Más Fotos.”
beyond performances, “A Grammy Celebration of Latin Music” will include interviews with Latin music icons and Grammy winners such as Daddy Yankee, Emilio Estefan, Lin-Manuel miranda, Rita Moreno, and Carlos Santana. Moreno, an EGOT winner, earned her sole Grammy Award at the 15th Grammy Awards for her children’s album work on “The Electric Company.” Santana’s 1999 album “Supernatural” achieved a record-tying eight Grammy wins in a single night, matching Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” from 1984.
Several artists have also received nominations for the 68th Grammy Awards. Edgar Barrera has received his third consecutive nomination for songwriter of the year (nonclassical) for his collaborations with artists including Karol G, Juanes, and Shakira. Indie band the Marias and Venezuelan Cuban American artist Daniela Avanzini of the group Katseye are both nominated in the best new artist category. Argentine duo Ca7riel and Paco Amoroso received thier first Grammy nomination for their EP “Papota” in the Latin rock or alternative album category, perhaps becoming the second Argentine group to win in that category after Los fabulosos Cadillacs in 1998. The cast of the Tony-winning Broadway musical “Buena Vista Social Club,” also a Grammy nominee for musical theater album, will also perform.
