Macron Faces Calls for Resignation as French dissatisfaction Soars
PARIS – Nearly two-thirds of French citizens (64%) now favor the resignation of President emmanuel Macron adn a snap presidential election, according to a new Odoxa-Backbon survey conducted for Le Figaro. The mounting discontent comes as Prime Minister François Bayrou faces a likely no-confidence vote and reflects a dramatic erosion of trust in Macron’s leadership amid ongoing economic challenges.
The widespread desire for change signals a deepening political crisis for Macron, who has already appointed four Prime Ministers in under two years. A majority (56%) of those surveyed also support a dissolution of the National Assembly and early legislative elections, seeking a broader reset of the country’s political direction. This surge in opposition underscores the growing frustration with the current government’s handling of the nation’s affairs and raises questions about its ability to govern effectively.
Separate polling by Verian for Le Figaro Magazine reveals a precipitous decline in Macron’s approval rating, now standing at just 15% – a six-point drop since July 2025. Even among voters who supported him in the first round of the 2022 presidential election, only 45% remain favorable, marking the lowest level as his initial election in 2017, according to an Elabe poll for Les Échos.Bayrou’s position is notably precarious ahead of a National Assembly vote on Monday, where opposition parties have signaled they will reject his request for urgent measures to address the national debt. Confidence in Bayrou himself is at a record low, with only 14% of french citizens expressing trust in his leadership, according to the Verian survey – the lowest ever recorded for a Prime Minister in this barometer.
