slice-Stopping Drill could Add Distance to Your Drives
Lake Mary, Fla. – Frustrated with slices costing you distance and accuracy off the tee? A simple drill utilizing a common household item – a yoga block – can definitely help golfers correct an out-to-in swing path and unlock longer, straighter drives, according to two-time LPGA National Teacher of the Year Cheryl Anderson.
Many recreational golfers struggle with an out-to-in swing, where the club path travels from outside the target line to inside during the downswing. This often results in a slice, where the ball curves sharply to the right (for right-handed golfers).Correcting this path is crucial for maximizing distance and consistency. Anderson’s drill provides immediate feedback, helping players visualize and feel the proper in-to-out swing needed for optimal ball striking.
The drill involves placing a yoga block (or similar soft, brick-shaped object) approximately one inch outside the golf ball after it’s teed up. as you swing, the block serves as a guide, encouraging a downswing path that avoids contact. Initially, practice slow-motion swings, focusing on missing the block consistently. Gradually increase speed to a full swing.
“If you tend to swing too steep or cut across the ball, you’ll hit the block,” Anderson explains. “When you consistently miss the block, you’ll find your drives soaring farther while avoiding slices and pop-ups.”
consistent practice with this drill trains the golfer to swing on a more efficient path, promoting a powerful and accurate drive. Anderson coaches at Heathrow Legacy Club in Lake Mary, Florida.
