Coppin State & filmmaker Devin Walker Unite to “Fight the stigma” of Addiction in Baltimore
A powerful film screening and community dialogue aims to spark change in the wake of a local crisis.
Coppin State University’s Department of Psychology, Counseling, and Behavioral Health is proud to present a groundbreaking partnership with alumnus and acclaimed filmmaker Devin Walker. This collaboration culminates in an exclusive screening of Walker’s deeply moving documentary, Fight the Stigma, a film that unflinchingly portrays Baltimore’s ongoing struggle with, and resilient response to, the opioid crisis and broader issues of addiction.
The timing of this event is notably poignant. Coming just weeks after the tragic cluster of overdoses in West Baltimore this July, Fight the Stigma isn’t simply a film; it’s a call to action. It’s a testament to the strength of the Baltimore community and a vital opportunity to foster awareness, education, and, crucially, solutions.
“We believe that storytelling is a powerful catalyst for change,” says Dr. Pinckney, Chair of the Department of Psychology, Counseling, and Behavioral Health at coppin State.
“Devin’s film provides a platform for authentic voices and lived experiences, challenging the pervasive stigma that prevents individuals from seeking help.”
The event is designed to be more than a passive viewing experience. It’s intended to ignite a sustained movement focused on the intersection of addiction, the damaging effects of stigma, and the power of community empowerment. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to engage directly with Walker and a distinguished panel of local mental health advocates.
As Walker himself notes, “This isn’t just about showing a film. It’s about creating a space for honest conversation, for shared understanding, and for building a more compassionate and supportive community.”
