Fenerbahçe officials expressed strong dissatisfaction following the last-minute cancellation of their EuroLeague matchup against Olympiakos, citing a security decision by the Greek government related to inclement weather.The club feels rebuffed in its attempts to reschedule the game and is closely watching the situation regarding a future contest with Panathinaikos.
The cancelled game, originally scheduled for December 5th, was postponed with just two hours’ notice, according to Fenerbahçe representative C. Ciritci. EuroLeague officials informed the team of the decision, attributing it to a Greek government security assessment. Fenerbahçe immediately proposed alternative dates – Friday or Saturday – but Olympiakos declined both offers. Ciritci explained the refusal stemmed from scheduling conflicts with other Greek teams, specifically the inability of Panathinaikos and olympiakos to play on the same day, and a subsequent clash with an Olympiakos versus AEK game.
“Our offer was rejected as Panathinaikos and Olympiakos cannot play two matches on the same day.We also offered to play the game on Saturday, but that was rejected because of the Olympiakos vs AEK game,” Ciritci stated to Fenerbahçe TV.Fenerbahçe maintains it fulfilled all necessary documentation and submitted it to the EuroLeague. “We will monitor the situation regarding the Panathinaikos match very closely,” Ciritci added.”We came to play basketball, but if they wont to play chess, we are good at that too.”
The Panathinaikos versus Valencia game is still scheduled to proceed on December 5th at 21:45.
