Las Vegas Grand Prix Threatened as City Battles Severe Flooding

LAS VEGAS, NV – The Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix faces potential disruption as torrential rainfall has caused widespread flooding across the city, impacting roads and infrastructure crucial to the race weekend. The race, scheduled for November 21-23, 2024, is under scrutiny as emergency services respond to the crisis.

The unprecedented rainfall, which began late Tuesday, has overwhelmed drainage systems, turning streets into rivers and prompting state of emergency declarations. The Las Vegas Strip and surrounding areas, including sections of the F1 circuit, are substantially affected. Concerns are mounting about the accessibility of the track for teams, equipment, and fans, as well as the safety of holding the event amidst the ongoing emergency.

Last year’s inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix was already marked by challenging conditions, wiht drivers like Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc struggling with frigid temperatures and low grip on the newly paved public roads. Norris crashed during qualifying and finished sixth, while Verstappen secured his fourth world title. The 2024 event was already anticipating challenges with tire management, as Pirelli excluded the softer C6 compound in an attempt to mitigate graining and wear issues experienced in 2023.

The current flooding adds a new layer of complexity to an already demanding race. The long straights and treacherous braking zones of the Las Vegas Street Circuit become even more hazardous when covered in water. The title battle between Lando norris, oscar Piastri, and Max Verstappen adds further pressure, with Norris currently leading by 24 points. Verstappen, who clinched his championship in Las vegas last year, returns with updated Red Bull RB21 car.

Officials are currently assessing the extent of the damage and working to clear roadways. A decision regarding the race schedule will be made in the coming days, prioritizing the safety of all involved.
