Title: Deep Breathing Improves Lung Function, Study Finds

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Zurich, Switzerland – A new study from teh Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) reveals that deep sighs significantly improve lung function by ⁤restoring the fluid ‌layering crucial for easy breathing. Published in the journal Science Advances, the research demonstrates how deep breaths reduce surface tension in lung fluid, making the lungs more flexible.

Researchers, led by Jan ⁢Vermant, simulated breathing patterns ‌and measured⁣ surface tension, finding a marked decrease after deep breaths. “The liquid wets the entire surface, ‍making the lungs more ‍deformable – or to use⁢ a technical expression – more‌ flexible,” ⁣Vermant explained ⁣in an ETH interaction.

The lungs’ surface fluid is ideally structured with a stiffer top layer and softer layers beneath. Shallow breathing gradually disrupts this layering, ⁤but ‍occasional deep breaths can re-establish it, according to lead author Maria Novaes-Silva. “this tension ‌affects how compliant the lungs are,” Vermant added, noting that increased flexibility reduces resistance during inhalation and exhalation.

These findings align with clinical observations‌ showing breathing difficulty increases with consistently shallow respiration⁤ and may offer new avenues for⁤ treating lung conditions. (APA/dpa)
