Cork Woman Jailed After Bail Violations and New Offences

A 20-year-old Cork⁢ woman has been sentenced to prison after breaching her bail conditions and committing further crimes. Eve Guerin, of Kinlay House, Shandon street, Cork, appeared before Judge ⁣Joanne Carroll at Bandon ⁢District Court.

Guerin’s case originated in Clonakilty District Court, were she previously pleaded guilty⁢ to four counts of theft from businesses in‌ Dunmanway on June⁣ 9th. She stole items totaling €83.69 from Deals 4 U, Buckley’s⁢ Hardware, Costcutter, and ⁤SuperValu, all⁢ of which were recovered in saleable condition. ⁤Guerin⁢ stated her intention was to place ‌the stolen goods on⁢ her recently‌ deceased father’s grave.

Following the‍ initial hearing, Judge Carroll granted⁣ Guerin bail, permitting a holiday to Benidorm, contingent⁣ on adhering to a curfew and regularly signing on ⁢at the Bridewell Garda Station in Cork while ‍a probation report was prepared.

Though, the court learned Guerin violated thes conditions, missing‌ sign-in dates as july 18th ‍and breaching her curfew five times. On September 3rd, she was arrested for theft and assault at Mahon ⁤Point⁢ Shopping Center, specifically for stealing ⁢from Lifestyle Sports and ⁢subsequently assaulting ⁢security personnel by throwing a stolen item at them. Guerin pleaded guilty to both charges on the day‍ of her arrest.

Defence solicitor‌ Plunkett Taaffe explained Guerin’s absences were due to traveling to ‍the UK⁤ following a serious accident⁣ involving her brother, who was admitted to intensive care.

Judge Carroll acknowledged the explanation but emphasized that Guerin had⁣ committed new offences‍ – theft and assault – while already on‍ bail. Concluding that the court had previously shown leniency, the judge stated Guerin was mistaken if she expected further bail. Guerin received a three-month⁢ prison sentence for each of the four ⁢original ⁢theft counts.
