State Funding Boosts Pedestrian Safety Project Near Citrus Grove Schools
CITRUS GROVE, FL – A $800,000 state funding allocation secured by State Representative Alex Rizo will considerably advance a $3.2 million pedestrian safety initiative aimed at protecting children and families walking and biking near schools in Citrus Grove. The funding, awarded too Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, will directly support improvements along SW 22 Avenue between 3rd and 6th Street - a corridor identified as a high-risk area for pedestrian crashes and fatalities.
The project, a collaborative effort between state, county, and city officials, focuses on enhancing safety for students and families traveling to and from school. Planned upgrades include curb extensions, a new mid-block crossing with Rectangular Rapid-Flashing Beacons (rrfbs) between NW 5th and NW 6th Streets, concrete safety islands, and an upgraded pedestrian signal at NW 22 Avenue between NW 4 Terrace and NW 5 Street. Beautification enhancements are also included.

Commissioner Higgins echoed this sentiment, stating, “With the support of our state and county teams, I’m excited to see this roadway become a safer, more welcoming place for the children and families of Citrus Grove.”
Miami-Dade County is contributing $2.4 million to the project, bringing the total investment to $3.2 million. The initiative exemplifies a accomplished partnership across all levels of goverment, demonstrating the impact of collaborative efforts in creating safer and more connected communities. The improvements are expected to significantly reduce pedestrian risks in the area and promote a more walkable and bikeable environment for residents.
