Title: Colorectal Cancer Surge in Korea Linked to Western Diet

Colorectal Cancer Risk Soars ⁢with ‍Meat & Alcohol Consumption, new Study ⁢Finds – Especially in ⁢Asia’s Shifting Diets

Seoul, South Korea – A ‌new study ⁣reveals a strong link between dietary habits and colorectal cancer risk,⁢ with concerning⁤ implications for rapidly ‍changing lifestyles in ‌Asia, especially South Korea. The research, recently⁢ published, highlights‌ a notable‌ increase in risk associated with high consumption of red and processed meats, and also alcohol, ⁢while emphasizing⁤ the protective ⁣benefits⁤ of calcium-rich foods and balanced diets.

The study found that diets ⁤heavy‍ in meat correlate directly with⁣ increased incidence of ⁢colorectal cancer. Consuming high⁤ amounts of red meat elevates risk by 18 percent, and processed⁣ meats like sausages and⁢ ham carry the⁢ same increased risk independently. While white meats such as⁢ chicken and turkey weren’t broadly⁤ linked to overall colorectal cancer, they ‍ were associated with a 40 percent higher ⁤risk of rectal cancer specifically.

However, alcohol emerged as the moast potent risk factor. Individuals consuming more than 30⁢ grams ‍of alcohol daily ⁢- roughly equivalent to over 500 milliliters of beer or three shots ⁢of soju, a‌ popular ‌Korean distilled ⁢spirit – faced a 64 percent‌ higher risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Conversely, ⁣the research points to preventative measures through diet. Calcium intake, sourced from foods like milk, dairy products, and small fish consumed with their bones, was linked to a 7 percent reduction in colorectal cancer risk. Moreover, diets⁢ prioritizing vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins demonstrated a⁤ 15 percent lower risk of colon cancer.

Researchers are‍ particularly concerned about the rising‌ rates of colorectal cancer among ‍young adults in Korea. The study underscores that Asians are no longer shielded from the dietary ‌risks previously observed primarily in ⁣Western ⁤populations, as traditional eating patterns give way to more Westernized diets. The rapid adoption of meat-centric and alcohol-heavy diets in countries like South Korea could fuel a continued increase in colorectal cancer cases unless significant ‍lifestyle changes are adopted.

The‌ study was reported by M.H. Lee (mhlee@koreabizwire.com). ‍ This research adds to a growing‍ body of evidence emphasizing the critical ⁤role⁣ of preventative dietary measures in combating‍ a cancer increasingly⁣ prevalent ‍globally, and particularly within a region⁢ undergoing ‍rapid dietary transition.Evergreen Context ⁤& Key ⁣Details Added:
