Colombia is poised to boast the longest vehicular tunnel in Latin America as construction progresses on the New road to the Sea project. The main tunnel, currently under development by Invías, will be a key component of the route connecting Medellín to the Pacific coast.
The ambitious infrastructure project, fully funded by the Government of Antioquia and the Mayor’s Office of Medellín, aims to dramatically improve connectivity and trade opportunities for the region. Completion of the entire project is targeted for 2027, with the installation of electromechanical systems - including ventilation, lighting, and security equipment – scheduled for 2026. Currently, work continues on lining the main tunnel and paving the corridor.
Construction is also underway on a 6.2-kilometer section (sector 2) featuring twelve bridges and six tunnels, with progress exceeding 60%. Officials anticipate completing two major 250-meter bridges before December 2026. The New Road to the Sea is envisioned as a vital artery for economic development, facilitating the transport of goods and people between Medellín and the Pacific coast, and positioning Colombia as a key player in regional trade.
