Pantone Declares ‘Cloud Dancer’ White as 2026 Color of the Year
PARIS – In a move signaling a potential shift towards minimalist aesthetics and sustainable fashion choices, Pantone has named “Cloud Dancer,” a shade of white, as its Color of the Year for 2026. The declaration, made amidst Paris Fashion Week, comes as designers increasingly featured white in their collections, from Stella McCartney’s show to presentations by Chanel, Givenchy, and Balenciaga, where Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, notably wore an all-white ensemble.
The selection of a neutral tone arrives as consumers grapple with economic uncertainty and a growing desire for simplicity. Pantone Color Institute’s Vice President, Leatrice Eiseman, described “Cloud Dancer” as “discrete” and “understated,” positioning it as a versatile and calming influence. Beyond aesthetics, the choice also taps into a rising eco-consciousness, with Eiseman noting the color represents “a more sustainable choice for the eco-conscious” – a nod to reducing consumption by embracing existing wardrobes.
White’s presence was prominent throughout the recent fashion showcases. Chanel displayed the color in simple silk T-shirts, Givenchy incorporated it into collared dresses, and Balenciaga saw it worn by the Duchess of Sussex in a complete outfit. Even former US First Lady Melania Trump is frequently seen in all-white looks.
The accessibility of white – with many individuals already possessing items in the shade – further reinforces its appeal. As Eiseman suggests, the 2026 Color of the Year may not require new purchases, aligning with a broader movement towards mindful consumption. The announcement has sparked debate, with some embracing the simplicity and others expressing practical concerns about maintaining the color’s pristine appearance.
