Chicago Restaurants Step Up to Support SNAP Recipients Amid Federal Aid Pause
CHICAGO – As uncertainty continues surrounding federal food assistance benefits, several Chicago-area restaurants are offering free or discounted meals to individuals and families impacted by the pause in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits. The support comes after a federal judge in Rhode Island ordered the government to utilize a contingency fund to continue program payments during the ongoing government shutdown, stating, ”There is there’s no doubt whatsoever that the six billion dollars in contingency funds are appropriated funds that are without a doubt necessary to carry out the program’s operation.” The judge emphasized that a government shutdown doesn’t eliminate the need for SNAP, only the funding.
