Chennai Braces for Intense Northeast Monsoon, Flood Prevention Measures Stepped Up
Chennai, Tamil Nadu – Residents of Chennai are preparing for heavy rainfall as the city anticipates the full force of the northeast monsoon, with forecasts predicting intense showers beginning Saturday. At least 10 districts across Tamil Nadu, including Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Sivaganga, and Salem, are under alert for perhaps severe weather conditions.
The Regional meteorological Center (RMC) has warned that heavy rain, defined as approximately 10 centimeters of rainfall in a single hour, is likely. While pinpoint accuracy remains a challenge, the RMC points to its recent “reasonably accurate” forecast of severe thunderstorms as evidence of improving predictive capabilities. The current conditions are typical of the transitional period between monsoons, and thunderstorms are expected in parts of the city later Saturday. Chennai Mayor has announced additional flood prevention measures are being implemented citywide to mitigate potential disruptions.
The northeast monsoon is a crucial weather system for Tamil Nadu, providing the majority of the state’s annual rainfall. Though, it also carries the risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying areas of Chennai. The city has been working to improve its drainage infrastructure following devastating floods in recent years, and these ongoing efforts are now being bolstered by the Mayor’s directive for additional preventative action. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions.
