Cheapest Steamers Perform Best in Recent Tests, But Don’t Ditch the Iron Yet
Zurich, Switzerland – A recent test by Swiss consumer program Kassensturz Espresso reveals that high price doesn’t necessarily equate to performance when it comes to steam smoothers (also known as garment steamers). The most affordable device tested actually delivered the best steam output, challenging assumptions about quality and cost in the appliance market.
While steam smoothers are gaining popularity for fast clothing refreshes, experts caution they aren’t a complete replacement for traditional irons. Lab technician Julie Sortant explains the devices excel at de-wrinkling clothes stored in closets or lightly refreshing garments already worn, but fall short for everyday ironing needs. “The steam plates are small, the temperature is limited and the steam output is rather moderate compared to an iron,” sortant stated.
The test findings highlight a key difference: steam smoothers lack the pressure of a heavy iron and the stability of an ironing board. This makes them a useful complement to a classic iron, or a suitable option for those who don’t require perfectly pressed results. Essentially, the steam smoother fills a niche-convenience and quick touch-ups-rather than replicating the comprehensive capabilities of an iron.
