San Francisco Fleet Week Soars On Without Blue Angels, Draws Eager Crowds
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Despite the absence of the famed Blue Angels and a partial government shutdown, San FranciscoS Fleet week celebrations continued to captivate spectators this weekend with thrilling air show performances and community events. While business owners anticipated lower attendance due to the scaled-down event, enthusiastic crowds turned out for the air show and Fleet Fest at Fisherman’s Wharf, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the annual tradition.
Fleet Week, traditionally a major economic driver for the city, faced uncertainty this year due to the federal government shutdown, which impacted the Blue angels’ ability to perform. the cancellation of the Blue Angels’ aerial demonstrations prompted organizers to pivot, focusing on other air show acts and bolstering ground-based events. This year’s adjustments underscore the event’s resilience and its importance to both the local economy and the community’s connection with the military.
“We’re hopeful. We’re trying to manage expectations. Last year, thousands of people showed up. We expect a lower turnout, but people are excited to come,” said Bri Maughan, executive director of the Fisherman’s Wharf Community Benefit District. Fleet Fest, featuring local military recruiters and a classic car display, aimed to fill the void left by the Blue Angels’ absence and maintain the festive atmosphere.
The impact of the scaled-down event was felt by some local businesses. Charlie islas of Cochinita Food Truck noted a significant drop in foot traffic compared to the previous year. “Right now, business is slow. Usually, this time last year, we had a big line of people coming by for food, burritos, tacos. Seems slow this year,” Islas said.
Despite the challenges, many attendees expressed their delight in being able to experience Fleet week. “I love it. I’m so happy people showed up, even though the government is shut down. It’s marvelous.I come every year. Even with the fog, I still come,” said spectator Pereira.
The air show continues Sunday, October 8th, from 12 to 4 p.m., offering a final opportunity to witness the aerial displays. Organizers are encouraging residents and visitors to enjoy the remaining festivities and support local businesses during this modified Fleet Week celebration.
