CAF Secures €500 Million Contract to Supply São Paulo Commuter Trains
São Paulo, Brazil - November 21, 2025 – Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF has been awarded a €500 million contract to deliver 107 commuter trains to São Paulo, Brazil. The agreement,finalized today,will considerably expand the capacity and modernize the rail network serving Latin America’s largest city.
The contract with CPTM (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos), São Paulo’s metropolitan train company, represents a major win for CAF and underscores the growing demand for modern rail infrastructure in Brazil. These new trains are intended to alleviate overcrowding on key lines, improve passenger experience, and support the region’s economic development. The delivery of the trains is scheduled to begin in 2027, with completion expected by 2029, and will directly impact the daily commutes of millions of São Paulo residents.
The new fleet will consist of seven-car trains designed to enhance accessibility and comfort. CAF stated the trains will incorporate the latest safety technologies and be optimized for energy efficiency. This order builds upon CAF’s existing presence in brazil, where it has previously supplied units to other cities.
CPTM highlighted the importance of the investment in modernizing its fleet to meet the increasing demands of the São Paulo metropolitan area. The new trains will operate on Lines 8-Diamond and 9-Emerald, crucial corridors for commuters traveling between the city center and surrounding areas. The project is part of a broader initiative by the São Paulo state government to invest in public transportation infrastructure.
