HP Support Directs Users with Lost BitLocker Keys to Microsoft for Recovery
Users locked out of thier HP computers due to BitLocker encryption are being directed to Microsoft Support for assistance in recovering their keys. The guidance comes as a response to a user inquiry within the HP Support Community, highlighting a common and possibly disruptive issue for Windows users.
BitLocker, a full volume encryption feature in Windows, protects data on a device. Though, access is contingent upon possessing a recovery key - a 48-digit numerical code – shoudl the user forget their password or encounter a system failure. HP support representative Steffen Baier confirmed the sole methods for retrieving this key are through a previously printed copy or access via the user’s Microsoft account, established during the initial PC setup.
According to Microsoft’s support documentation, users can attempt to locate their BitLocker recovery key through their Microsoft account at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/find-your-bitlocker-recovery-key-6b71ad27-0b89-ea08-f143-056f5ab347d6. If the key remains unrecoverable, a complete reinstallation of Windows on the encrypted drive will be necessary to regain access to the computer.
