Title: Bird Flu Outbreaks Disrupt Dutch Poultry Industry
Second Bird Flu Outbreak Disappoints Dutch Poultry Sector
Deventer,Netherlands – The dutch poultry sector is expressing disappointment following a second confirmed outbreak of avian influenza within two weeks, raising concerns despite high hygiene standards across the industry. The outbreaks, occurring at a broiler breeder farm and a laying hen rearing farm, threaten supply chain disruptions and underscore the continued presence of the virus.
The recent cases are especially frustrating as both affected farms rank highly in hygiene assessments and maintain robust rearing practices, according to Piet de Jong, chairman of the sector department.”Everyone is extra sharp, especially after such a first case,” de Jong stated. “After such a second outbreak, everyone realizes that the virus is present again.” The outbreaks could led to significant downtime for farms awaiting replacement chicks, potentially creating “a huge hole” in production.
This news arrives as the sector cautiously anticipates a less severe bird flu season than in recent years. While acknowledging the ongoing threat,de Jong expressed hope that the isolated nature of these infections-with no evidence of spread between farms-indicates the effectiveness of existing hygiene protocols. “They are individual, unique infections. This indicates that as a sector we have such good hygiene that we prevent mutual infections,” he explained.
Despite this optimism, de Jong emphasized the need for continued vigilance. “Two cases in two weeks is not a good track record. So as far as I’m concerned, this was the last one for this year.” The sector remains on high alert, prioritizing biosecurity measures to prevent further outbreaks and minimize disruption to poultry production.
